For example, whereas some 12 percent of women in the general population develop breast cancer, roughly 60 percent of women who inherit mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 eventually develop the disease. Women who carry these mutations also have an increased risk of. About 9 percent of men carrying BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations will develop breast cancer by age 80.
